ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Roy Purcell sought himself in the desert, found himself there, and has never left. Over the years his passion for the desert Southwest deepened into a sensitive and mature relationaship with the earth and her first peoples.

Purcell's more intimate works sometimes take the form of beautiful hand made “portfolios” each filled with original artworks, amulets, and trinkets all possessed of special significance and meaning. This book is but a taste of the wonders of Roy's creative and mystical world.

He lives with his wife Beverly in Tubac, Arizona, home to his studio, art gallery, and a multitude of desert creatures who come to be painted on early morning visits.
  • Roy Purcell is a prolific and respected multimedia artist, artist and enviromentalist
  • Purcell was born in 1936 and raised as a Mormon in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah
  • His best-known work is “The Voyage,” a mural on 2,000 square feet of cliff face near Chloride, AZ.
  • Purcell operates one of the largest etching presses in the world at his studio in Tubac, AZ. From it, he has pulled prints as long as 12 feet.
  • In 2001, Purcell published Portraits of Nature, a book combining his wateercolors of desert life with essays by naturalists.
  • Purcell has served as the director of the Mojave Museum of History and Arts in Kingman, AZ and the director of the Southern Nevada Museum in Henderson, NV. He was a resident of the Las Vegas area for more than 20 years.
  • His artwork is in many personal and corporate collections in North America, Europe, Asia, and Austrailia.
